Richard Merrell, a lifelong fan of the great game of baseball, conceived the idea for "Way off Base" while watching a San Diego Padres game on television one evening. "It all started when Padres announcer Mark Grant used the term 'ground balls," said Richard. "The phrase sounded exceptionally painful - to just have your testicles ground up like so much chop meat. The cartoon progressed naturally from there."
Richard is co-author (along with his late father) of the award winning memoir "Gangway, Regular Navy! Life and Humor in the United States Navy during the Cold War." He works as a regulatory affairs manager and technical writer in the medical device manufacturing industry, where he recently wrote a corporate profile that earned his company San Diego County's 2010 "Exporter of the Year" award from the World Trade Center, San Diego.
A proud United States Army veteran, Richard resides in northern San Diego County with his family and his cat, Olive. Richard is enthralled with the brilliantly mysterious composer and guitar genius known simply as Buckethead.
